The main objective of this study is to analyse the evolution of reading literacy in Spain in the context of the OECD, comparing the organisation’s predictions for 2024 with the actual results observed. In this analysis, we seek to identify possible heterogeneity in the evolution of reading comprehension, especially in relation to population subgroups determined by variables such as socio-economic level, gender, the level of formal education attained, immigration, among others.

In addition, the aim is to explore the relationship between reading literacy and several relevant labour market variables, such as type of employment, labour force participation rate, unemployment rate, full-time employment, and average, median and hourly wages, among others. A detailed analysis will be carried out to observe possible heterogeneous effects of these relationships depending on characteristics such as socio-economic status, gender, educational level and other relevant factors.

Finally, the study will seek to identify whether the labour market values literacy skills, assessing their influence on wages and/or the type of employment contracts, and how this valuation varies according to the different levels of education attained. Robust estimations will also be carried out to detect possible heterogeneous effects in the relationship between reading literacy and labour market variables.
